Joint Compound Wall Art Tutorial

You will require
  • Canvas or plywood
  • Joint compound ( wall putty)
  • Acrylic colors
  • 3 d acrylic colors (optional)
  • Gesso
  • Fevicol
  • Sponge
  • objects for texturing e.g. Stamps, combs, cookie cutter, stencils

Apply fevicol on canvas. Spread the joint compound on canvas around 1/4th inch thick & as evenly as possible with the help of spatula or a sheet of metal.  If you apply it thicker it will crack after drying.

Wet the texturing tools with water, slowly press it over the wet joint compound and remove. You can use anything with good texture like stamps, clay modelling tools, kitchen utensils, pencils, bubble paper, crocheted table cloths, stencils, lace and so on. Go wild with your imagination and make random textured pattern. Clean the edges with scale. Let it dry completely(around 1 day)

Apply one layer of  gesso (which is basically primer for acrylics)
After drying color the entire painting with black.

Immediately remove it with wet sponge. Leave the color which has settled in the deep lines. Let it dry.

Paint it with color of your choice. Remove it randomly from some places with wet sponge. Let it dry.
Repeat the process with contrasting color till you get the desired effect.

I have added some details with golden 3d acrylic color. This is optional.
Paint the border and sides with black.

Cover it with acrylic gloss varnish. Frame it if you like. I'm gonna do that once I get time.
Try it & send me snaps of your masterpiece.
